What Was Old is New Again
Knowing a good thing when they see it, Capcom has gone to great lengths to ensure that everything that made the legendary Street Fighter II a hit in the arcades, living rooms and dormitories across the globe all those years ago has been brought back in Street Fighter IV, and this naturally starts with the characters. Fans of the franchise, as well as the fighting genre in general, will be happy to know that whether you prefer to stick with the superior abilities of top tier characters or explore the ins and outs of mid to lower level combatants, when it comes time to pick your fighter there is a wide array of choices. Also, not only will players be able to play as and against their favorite classic characters, such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief, Blanka, Sagat, etc., they will also be able to take on new characters. Just a few of these include:

Abel from 'Street Fighter IV' Abel
This young French amnesiac comes from a mixed martial arts and mercenary background and is dedicated to chasing down the remnants of Shadaloo.
Crimson Viper from 'Street Fighter IV' Crimson Viper
This tough and beautiful agent assumes a businesslike demeanor, ignoring all emotion and obligation to her fellow man. She wears a high-tech suit filled with deadly gadgetry..
El Fuerte from 'Street Fighter IV' El Fuerte
This fighter divides his time between perfecting his Lucha Libre skills and his cooking abilities, yet surprisingly his indomitable spirit is a match for even the legendary Red Cyclone.
Rufus from 'Street Fighter IV' Rufus
This portly fighter has declared himself America's greatest fighter and uses his own brand of Kung Fu in his decidedly one-sided rivalry with Ken for top dog in the States.

In addition, characters and environments are rendered in stylized 3D, while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes. Six-button controls for the game return, with a host of new special moves and features integrated into the gameplay system. Street Fighter IV brings a brand new fighting game to fans the world over.

Key Game Features:

  • 3D environments and characters.
  • Traditional "2D" Street Fighter six-button gameplay.
  • Classic Street Fighter characters re-imagined for a new generation of gamers, including the original cast of Street Fighter II.
  • New brawlers: female super-spy Crimson Viper, lucha libre wrestler El Fuerte, mixed martial artist Abel and more.
  • New special moves that go beyond any Street Fighter fan's wildest imagination, including Focus Attacks, Super Combos, and the revenge-fueled Ultra Combo system.
  • Amazing locations never seen before in a Street Fighter game.
  • New gameplay elements provide challenges for both newcomers as well as the most seasoned Street Fighter pro.
New Combat Features: Focus Attacks and Ultra Combos
Although Street Fighter IV is designed to draw heavily from past game features in its franchise history, it does offer some stunning new gameplay options. The first of these are Focus Attacks. These moves allow players to absorb the energy from an attack and quickly counter with their own. Used properly, Focus Attacks allow for tremendous flexibility during combat and are the end result of efforts by the game's development team to evolve combat away from the rigid memorization of set combination patterns, giving players the freedom to be creative against opponents. The other new combat feature are new powered up moves called Ultra Combos. Like standard combos their purpose is to unleash maximum damage on an opponent, but unlike the combos of old, when performed correctly these long strings of punches, kicks and moves result in changes to the in-game camera angle and quick cinematics which illustrate the strength of your skills like never before. Taken together, these two new features herald Street Fighter IV as the new king of the fighter genre and a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Classic   July 7, 2010
Albert A. Mendoza (Grants Pass, OR)
This game is great, a very good addition to the series. Playing online might get a little annoying, especially if your trying to get through store mode, people continue to interrupt, but overall its a great game!

5 out of 5 stars Great SF game   May 3, 2010

Great SF game. It is a classic.

Nothing to add that the other reviews haven't said.

I would buy the new Super SF4 instead, if you don't have this one already.

1 out of 5 stars Highly Overrated   April 21, 2010

I can honestly say that this game is, without a doubt, the most highly overrated game out there. As an experienced Street Fighter II player I found the game to be the same in almost every way. There is truly nothing new here. The graphics are definitely better. But the graphics itself does not impress me. I thought the characters looked rather cartoony in comparison to all the games out there for this current generation of consoles. Second, the movements are actually the same. Yes, there are updated moves but they still look the same to me. The ability to generate the special moves is a little easier compared to the original Street Fighter II. Third, The cut-scenes leave a lot to be desired. I thought they were somewhat bland and cheaply made compared to the characters themselves which are already dated in my opinion. Just look at Call of Duty 4 and you will see what I mean. Fourth, I cannot believe that they charged the amount for this game which is nothing really new. It's just a rehash of all the prior Street Fighter games. Now they have Super Street Fighter at a lower price but still so high in terms of their actual worth. The bonus material, worlwide matches, just doesn't cut it to me. Why don't they have true tournaments periodically to make it worth your while? We certainly have the technology to do this. And when I mean tournaments, I mean a true tournament that is officiated by referees. Finally, yes, the game is supposed to be difficult. But some of the moves by the A.I. opponents are really cheap. I am for challenging games but this one cuts the cake. If I had known how this game was going to be I would not have purchased it. It was a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars More so for the experienced street fighter fan   January 31, 2010
J. Wheeler
I am an avid Street Fighter fan, and have been so since street fighter two turbo. This game is nothing less than spectacular when it comes to the visuals, the fighting, satisfying finishes, and overall replay value.
That being said the game is not perfect. It is not really a "pick up and play" type game for those not familiar with street fighter games. The most frustrating part of this game is how challenging it could be at times, even on the easiest setting. It also would have been nice to have some extra challenge modes, a tournament mode, dramatic battle, or tag battles would have also been fun to see. (But maybe I'm just saying that because most new fighting games give you so many different ways to play these days.)
Anyway if you enjoy street fighter and its style of play, or just playing games with a steep learning curve and the occasional challenge, then this game is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Street Fighter came back : )   January 30, 2010

First off, if you like 2D fighting games and have been a fan since the '90's then just buy this if you haven't already. For all others, I'll keep the review short but informative.

For the casual players (you play every now and then but don't take games that seriously). The game is good but not exactly great for this type of customer. Playing by yourself against the computer should be fun since you can play with whichever character you want and still beat arcade mode in under 20 minutes. The difficulty scales well with the only exception being the final boss, Seth. But if you've played any fighting game before, or any videogame before you should know that final bosses are meant to be overpowering. Besides the arcade mode, playing with friends online will be fun as long as they are on your skill level.

I really think this game is meant for the hardcore fan who always tries to better his skills online and enjoys pulling off hard to time combos using FDC and reading his opponents moves. If you're one of these people, this game is deep, has a huge community of strong players and you will be challenged.

This game has great replay value for hardcore. But casual players will be quickly turned off by the huge skill gap online between the advanced players and the beginners.

*VERY IMPORTANT*
If you like very specific fighting games that cater to your playstyle you might want to rent this first. For example, if you like Guilty Gear and Marvel vs Capcom's fast-paced, offense oriented fighting you WILL be turned off by the amount of defensive counter play and turtling strategies. If this is the case I recommend BlazBlue instead where this playstyle is actually penalized. This depends on you, the gamer.
